About This Song:
[Lyrics]
One step forward, two steps back
It's the way of the world if you slip out of track
It's so hard to recover when you get knocked down
Can't remember what's up, just keep stumblin' around
In a lightheaded daze, 'cause you just can't admit
Just how badly you're shaken, you stop and you sit
And reflect on the past, even though it still hurts
When you just can't get over the marks that came first
And the first cuts are deep, they go straight to the core
Now you're jarred to the bone, and your pride is still sore
So you flinch at the touch, of a warm, caring hand
Because deep down inside, no you won't let them in
'Cause it hurts just to think, reminisce 'bout the past
Nothing more than a blur, it went by far too fast
Can't remember a thing, except the hurt and the pain
Cause when life gets messed up, all the hope fades away
Now I'm takin' two steps back
Lost in thought and struggling just to find myself
Can't move forward, can't get past
I'm lost in guilt, and I don't know where to hide myself
Trapped deep inside, like a long winding maze
Try to crawl through this labrynth, you count down the days
Well the light at the end's getting farther away
And more dim by the second, can't see your face
So you stare in the mirror, reflection's cracked
But the mirror is fine, just your brain feels tapped
Like it's stuck on repeat, at the end of a song
It's so sad and depressing, it will not turn off
Doesn't matter at all what the future is like,
'Cause you're already gone, and the end is in sight
Inside of your heart, all the walls tumble down
As you drop to your knees and you don't make a sound
All the pain that has come in this short span of time
Is a hint for the future, don't set things awry
As you marvel at how delicate life can be
Just know it's not all bad, but it's not easy to see
Now I'm takin' two steps back
Lost in thought and struggling just to find myself
Can't move forward, can't get past
I'm lost in guilt, and I don't know where to hide myself
Take a step back
Think things over
Pull yourself back
It's not over
Now I'm takin' two steps back
Moving on, 'cause time won't mend these injuries
Moving forward, I'll get past
Because I know, that changing things is up to me
I don't have too much to say about Two Steps Back. It's a typical pop-rock piece with lyrics in that vein. This style crept into a couple of the tracks toward the tail-end of Saying Goodbye To Yesterday, and might be something that shows up in my future work as well, with, albeit, more mature lyrics.
