About This Song:

Breaking The Waves

[Lyrics]

I was broken and pushed beyond my limit

To the point of no return

I can still hear their sarcastic laughter,

As they mocked aloud "When would I learn"?

Time passed like a river, flowing chaotically

Without wait or regard

I was given an ultimatum, but it's true what they all say

Old habits die hard

Sink or swim, it's time to get up

And stop wallowing under the waves

There's a new day to face, or so they all say,

'Cause a shadow looms over the gates

So too does the sun, I guess for one there is one,

There won't be none 'til the last day has come

So for now I don't think, 'cause time's just a blink,

Let me bask in an ordinary life

Ooh

Ooh

Breaking the waves as they crashed all around me

It was then that a thought did occur

I could go with the flow giving up my resistance

And embrace the directional turn

Well you wanna know what?

I'm glad that I didn't,

'Cause I learned to prepare for the worst

And because of that fact, I'm grateful whenever

Anything less is delivered

It's time now to rise, look myself in the eye

And remind myself the old day has died

But now with all that I've learned, maybe I'll go with the turn

And let come whatever may

Ooh

Ooh

Breaking the waves as they crashed all around me

It was then that a thought did occur

I could go with the flow giving up my resistance

And embrace the directional turn

I remember this song causing me a world of frustration when I was recording, and it's really silly in retrospect. I wrote a song that was out of my  vocal range and didn't feel like transposing the whole thing down because I really liked the tune of it. Eventually, I figured out a way around it but I remember it taking forever to get the vocals recorded. I was listening to Pink Floyd's last album, The Division Bell quite a bit around the time I wrote this and I think I took a lot of inspiration from that (and A Momentary Lapse Of Reason).

The tune also reminds me a little bit of celtic music for some reason or another, and I think some of the lyrics are also partly inspired by Stone Sour's track Zzyzx Rd. So much originality up in here.
